Thank You - SME Alumni Players Help Out

E-mail Print PDF

I wanted to extend a great big THANK YOU to some of the SME Alumni players that have stopped by twice so far this year to help out with the team!  Jack Heary  (SME 09') and Bob Heary (SME 08'), both alumni and currently playing on the St. Joeseph's Collegiate Institute volleyball team.  We were also joined by Alex Snyder (SME 09') and Zach Schurr (SME 09') who are both currently playing on the Canisius High School volleyball team.  We truly appreciate all of them coming back to help out and it makes a big difference!

It is truly an honor to have them back helping and to see that they have gone on to successfully extend their volleyball careers after graduating from SME.  They play both with and against the squad in some spirited scrimmages as well as help out with some of the drills when they can attend.

Not to be forgotten, Charlie Salamone who is with us regularly, is an SME 05' Alumni and helps out coaching on a regular basis.  Charlie went on to a highly recognized career at St. Mary's High School playing volleyball and now attend Niagara Community College.

This may be inspiring me to add an Alumni Section to the website here where past players can submit their bios and leave contact email information for anyone that wants to keep current with their progress after leaving. Any other past SME Alumni are certainly welcome at our practices anytime and may email me to inquire.

St. Mary's has had a strong boys volleyball legacy and competed at the top of the Lombardo Division most of the past 6 years and many of our Alumni have had successful playing careers in High School.

St. Peter & Paul (B) - Match 1

E-mail Print PDF

In our first match, the boys came out and played well given their only (3) days of practice together and won this match.  The first team saw limited action but played very well making only 2 errors the entire game!  We only missed 1 serve which was excellent.  Marc G. led the way with 11 good serves of which 8 were for aces!  Spenser H., Mike S. and Alex H. led the team in passing each with either 4 or 5 along with Mike P.'s  4 hits for aces.  A total team effort with 11 serves for ace and 7 hits for kill.

In the second game Mike K. and Peter J. both placed in 6 serves with 5 of them for ace while Wyatt W. and Spenser H. each had 4 serves in with 5 aces between them.  Peter J. led the team with 5 passes while Mike K., Mike P and Alex H. all contributed 2 or 3 passes each in support. Mike S. led the team in setting with 4 while Wyatt W. had a remarkable back-court hit for ace, a great feat for him.  Again, with 15 serves for ace and 3 kills we played well.

The third game serving was led by Jake C. with 9 good serves, 6 of those for ace while Peter J. followed up with another 6 good serves and 3 of those for ace and Anthony B. who had 5 good serves of which 2 were for ace.  This group of boys really spread the ball around in a true team effort with Anthony B. and Jake L. each with 4 passes whle Jake C. and Austin K. each had 3.  Anthony B., Wyatt W. and Jake L. all got hits in with each getting 1 kill.  A total team effort here.

Overall for our first outing the boys played great and with (3) added practices this week, I would expect that they will become more fluid and we can work on some of the issues that did come up.  A great effort by all of the boys!  The match statistics can be found by clicking here.

Canisius Clinic Cancelled for Sat.

E-mail Print PDF
Unfortunately, the athletic center at Canisius High School is only available in the afternoons currently due to their baseball practice so we can't work out the date for this Saturday, 3/20.  We will work to reschedule and I will let you know when we get that done.  I will see if there are any other gyms available in the Lancaster area for a Saturday practice in the morning and send a Memo home through the school this week if there is.

Canisius Volleyball Clinic

E-mail Print PDF

Canisius High School was gracious enough to offer a volleyball clinic to our boys earlier this year when I was there for the basketball tournament.  I'vve been in contact with them and it we are shooting for Sat March 20th in the morning as it's on the schedule currently with a TBD time listing.  This will be at their facililty on Main St. so that all three courts can be used if needed.

We can organize rides so that everybody doesn't have to drive there.  We may be attending with another league school, North Tonawanda, as I'm waiting to hear back from their coach on their attendance. This will make for a great day of skills work along with a scrimmage toward the end to get us ready for league play.

League play should start in the last 10 days of March so our practice schedule may lessen as I get those dates.
