Sacred Heart (B) - Match 2

E-mail Print PDF

This was the second match of the night and once again the opposition had a lot of trouble returning our serves so we did not have much to speak of in the statistics category.  The boys played very well in this seond match and won the first game 25 - 4.  Serving was led by Jake C. with 15 serves in and 6 of those for ace followed by Marc G. with 4, 3 of them for ace.  Hitting was led by Mike K. and Alex H. each with 2, passing was led by Mike S. with 3 and Jake C and Alex H. each with 2 while setting was led by Mike S. with 5 and Jake C. with 4.

In the seond game we won 25 - 12.  Serving was led by Jake C. with 6 in and 5 for ace, Alex H. with 6 in and 3 for ace and Spenser H. with 5 in and 2 for ace. 4 different players show a good pass while 2 had a single set and 3 recorded hits.  Again, not too much to speak of.

In the third game we won 25 - 6 and Anthony B. led the team in serving with 11 good serves, 5 of those for Ace while Jake L. had 5 good and 3 of them for ace.  Passing was led by Rob D. with 2.  We had 3 with 1 set apiece and hitting was led by Mike K. and Mike P. each with 2 hits.

Overall we played very efficiently in all three games and recorded 28 points in ace (serves in which the opponent can't get a decent first pass on) and there were another 12-15 that never came back over the net after 2-3 passes for the other team.  The statistics for this match can be found here.

St. Francis - Match 1

The boys played fairly well after shaking off some rust from the Spring Break.  Overall this was not an overly difficult win for them so the stat sheets are light as many times the opposition didn't return our serves back over the net.  In the first game we won it 25-11 after a few rusty moments early on in which we made several un-forced errors.  Serving was led by Marc G. with 10 good ones and 8 of those for ace along with Jake C. with 8 good ones and 5 of those for ace.  Setting was led by Jake C. with 4, hitting was led by Marc G. with 3 and passing was led by Mike S. with 4, and Alex H. and Marc G. both with 3.

In the second game we only saw 3 servers although Mike K. only got 1 for the win.  The others were Alex H. with 14 serves, 9 for ace and Mike S. with 9 and 8 of those were for ace.  Passing was led by Jake C. with 2, hitting was led by Jake L. with 2 and setting was led by Mike S. with 3.  As I said, with 17 points off of ace and a few others that still didn't clear the net back, we did not record too many stats.  We won this game 25 - 2.

In game #3, serving was led by Mike K. with 13 and 4 of those for ace and Jake L. with 5 and 2 of those for ace.  Passing was led by Mike K., Peter J. and Spenser H. all with 2 each.  Setting was led by Mike K. with 2 and we recorded no hits.  We did win 25-8 to finish out the match.

As I reiterate, we didn't have to many opportunities to pass, set and hit the ball given the serves that were not returned.  The statistics from this match can be found here.

St. Peter & Paul (A) - Match 2

We did loose this match, but we fought very hard and had some great performances to stay in this match and win the first game.  In the first game we were led with hitting by Marc G. who had 3 hits for kill and Mike P. who registered a hit for kill along with a block for a point!  Net play was very strong although we were loosing 23 - 15 when Alex H. came up to serve.  Alex gets high praise as he served up a classic run of 10 serves of which 7 were for ace!  Against the best team that we faced all year so far, this was a great accomplishment and at least the last 4 serves were jump serves and all were very powerfully hit.  We won that game 25 - 23.  The other boys played superbly behind Alex's serving at that point as we still had 3 points to get that were volleyed out, or it might have spelled a lost game for us.  Phenominal play by all as they knew they were under pressure.

In the second game we ended up loosing 25 - 18, but it was very close for most of the game.   After each team had served 6 times each, it was 8-8.  Each team had only 2 serves that were not sided-out by the other team!  After the second round of serving for both teams (6 more servers for each side) it was still very close at 15-20 in favor of SS P&P.  The difference was that we failed to side-out 6 of their serves and they only missed on 2 of ours!  In reality we had probably out-played them at this point as 5 of our side outs were a result of missed serves at this point which was unfortunate as we only missed 3 the entire first game.  It got tough as 3 more servers for each side and the same result, each time the other team sided-out the serving team so now it was 18-23 and our back was against the wall!  SS P&P did make their next 2 serves to finish out the game!  A very close game all the way through.  Serving was led by Spenser H. and Jake C. with 3 each and neither had a missed serve nor did Mike P. on his two serves.  Both Marc G. and Mike P. recorded a successful block.  Mike P. led the team with 2 hits for kill while Marc G. chipped in 1 hit for kill.  Again, net play was strong as was passing and digging of hits that came back at us.

We also lost the third game at 25-11 to cost us this match.  We only missed 1 serve, but only had 7 serve rotations as we just did not get into sync and get this team sided out and it appeared that they had gained some momentum and were serving a little harder.  We gave up a 9 serve run to their third server, runs of 3 to their 5th, 7th and 8th servers and that sealed the match for us.  We did not do the same job of passing into position to hit and played off our heels a little bit this game as we only recorded 1 hit for kill and 1 block this game.  It's tough to beat a team this good if you don't pass and get the ball hit back at them as they were surely hitting the ball back at us 75% of the time.

Overall, the boys played very hard and in reality, stayed right with them in volleying the 2nd game, we just didn't get on a run and recover from the 5 missed serves, but they learned a lot this match and should be very proud of their efforts and have much faith in themselves.  As I only played the starting 6 all the way, setting was evenly shared by Mike S. and Jake C. for all of the games.  I do not have the passing and full hitting results to record at this time, but here are the statistics that I do have for this match.

OLBS - Match 2

E-mail Print PDF

The boys rebounded tonight and won the match against OLBS and took all three games, although they did give me a scare in the 2nd game again.  We won the first game, 25-10 and looked pretty sharp in doing so.  Mike P. and Marc G. led the team with 5 serves each while Jake C. and Alex H. each placed 4 in.  Mike K. led the team with 6 hits while Peter J. had 3.  Mike S. led in passing with 5 and Jake C. with 4 while both recorded 5 or 6 sets each!  A very complete game by the boys.

In the second game we were leading 12-7 and I put in 2 more substitutions and after 6 servers we were up 15-9 when we hit trouble for some reason and we allowed the 7th server to run 8 in a row to make the match 16-18 in their favor!  We did substitute back into the starting rotation as if we loose the 2nd game, we can't get all of the boys in the third game as we really need to do as they support those that start and we need to finish games so that everyone gets their opportunities to play and improve their personal game.  We went on to win at this point 25-21, but it's hard to explain why sometimes they don't pull together and play together.  Jake C. led the team in serving with 7 followed by Mike S. with 4.  I believe we only missed 2 serves, we just didn't always pass well and get into hitting positions.  We only hit the ball 5 times the entire game and Jake C. led with 2.  Passing was led by Mike S. with 6 and Mike K. with 4.  Jake C. led in setting with 4 and Spenser H. with 3.

In the third game they responded very well and shook off the rough play from the 2nd game and we won 25-13.  Alex H. led the serving with 10 although I asked him not to blast the ball and we won many points on volley.  Anthony B. also had 5 servers and neither missed a serve.  The team missed 4 serves as a whole.  Hitting was led by Wyatt W. and Jake L. each with 2.  Passing was led by Anthony B. with a strong performance and 10 hits followed by Jake L with 5 and Peter J. with 4.  Setting was led by Jake C. with 6.  A very nice job by the boys in this game.

We take a week off for Spring Break now so the boys should be ready when we return for a double-header on Monday the 26th at home.  The stats for this match are found here.

A Very Thrilling Match!

E-mail Print PDF

I wanted to post quick comments about tonight's match at St. Peter & Paul (A) although I have to travel to PA yet tonight on business so I apologize for not being able to get the usual match update finished tonight.  I know some of the boys like to read it the next day.  Both Charlie and I were very proud of the boy's efforts tonight even though we did end up on the loosing end of the match.

We did take the first game off this team and competed at a much higher level than in Monday's match and at times came very close to pulling this match out before succumbing to a very good team.  The boys left it all on the court tonight and played very hard and fought for many points.  They dove for balls and dug out tough hits many times and served like we always know that we can as that is a definite strength on this team.  Many times it's only 3 or 4 plays that separates one team from the next as when you are down 22-15, 3 plays the other direction makes it a bascially tied game and a rush to the finish.

I believe they learned much about themselves tonight and now truly believe that they can play with anybody if they put their mind to it and continue to carry today's attitude over into practice and their upcoming matches.  The St. Peter & Paul coach was very gracious in taking a moment to speak to them and telling them that they played awesome and could beat anybody on a given night with that effort.

The season statistics were updated with everything except for passing and in-play hitting from tonight's match so you will find serving, setting, blocking, hitting kills and hitting errors were updated as I had those with me.
