Updates Week of April 4th

E-mail Print PDF
Info and updates for the week of April 4th:

1) Stanton boys are now 1 and 0 after a solid 3 game win at St. Amelia's.  Once some first set jitters were dealt with, solid team work, good passing, and great serving led the way.  Great Start!

2) Forms will be coming home.  We will be collecting the 30 dollar athletic fee this week.  Shirt order will be ready soon.  Cost to each boy less than 10 dollars.  These shirts will be their jersey.  They keep the shirt at the end of the season.

3) Practice for both teams after school on Monday.  Lombardo 3 to 5, Stanton 4 to 6.  Stanton boys welcome to stay after school, get homework done, start working out (and save parents a trip back).  Both coaches will be there.

4) Some schedule changes for the week:

Lombardo opener at St. John Vianney, scheduled for Wednesday, has been postponed until 4/27.  There will NOT be a practice.

Stanton home opener, originally a double-header this Friday, has been changed to a single game.  The match against OLBS has been changed until 4/28.  We will still be playing Sacred Heart at 5 pm.

5) All other plans for the week are unchanged.  Please try and be at the match 30 minutes early to begin warmups.  Complete updated schedule found here on the schedule tab.

Questions:  Please contact either of us, Pat Concannon or Dave Santoro with any questions or issues.

Thanks!

SME Boys Volleyball Takes A Step Up!

In building on the last three years of SME success, this year the school will have two teams competing in the Boys Varsity division to give the boys further exposure on the second team and to build their competencies much quicker than previously able to.

This stragegy has been employed by the (2) most successful programs over the past 5 years in the Diocesan League and now SME will use this same team building strategy.  Goodluck to both of the 2011 Boys Varsity Teams in this year's journey to the Diocesan Tournament.

A Super Battle in the Finals

The Finals for the Diocesan Championship became an epic battle before St. Peter & Paul A, the Lombardo Division Season Champion, went on to win the match in the third game.  Both teams played a phenominal match and both at times dominated the other.

In the first game we lost 25-20 on a back and forth game all the way.  After 3 servers each, we were leading 6-3.  After 6 servers each we were leading 12-11.  After 9 servers each it was tied 17-17!  As you can see it was tough all the way.  In fact after 12 servers we were down 20-22 and then they made the next 3 points.  We were led in serving by Spenser H. with 5 and Alex H. with 3.  We dominated the hitting again with Mike P. with 12 hits and 4 of those for kill and Marc G. with 4 hits and 1 for kill.  Give St. Peter & Paul credit, they dug out more of those hits than any other team and that is why the kills had dropped and they won the first game.

In the second game it was more of the same although we only missed 1 serve the entire game and seemed to put them on the defensive more often with our serve, but it was still very close all the way.  After 3 servers each we were up 10-6.  After 6 servers each we were up 16-13 and after 9 servers each it was 22-22!  We then made the next 3 serves and points to win this game.  Again, we dominated the nets in hitting and were led by Mike P. with 12 hits and 5 of those for kill followed by Marc G. with 8 hits and 5 of those for kills!  Serving was led by Marc G. with 7 and 2 for ace followed by Jake C. with 5 and both Mike P. and Alex H. with 4.  The boys hung in there and passed well and set equally well in order to make all of those hits.

In the third game, which was ultimately a heart-breaking game for the team, St. Peter and Paul stepped up and had some answers for our hitting game and made several key blocks as well as they hit the ball back at us better than we had seen most of the season.  We did have a good lead after 4 servers each of 7-4 although we had trouble with their 5th server.  Not so much his serving, but that is were they made some good net plays and blocked several of our hits as well as they made several key hits at us and eventually ran off 10 points in a row.  We lost this game 15-9 although the boys played hard.  Serving was even although Jake C. did lead with 3 good ones.  We sided out each of their first 4 servers on their first serve whereas we made points of our #2, #3 and #4 servers.  Hitting was led by Mike P. with 5 and 1 of those was for kill.  Give St. Peter & Paul much credit for hanging in there when down and playing a good game to win.

trophyIn having such a great season, the team helped to propel two of our boys into the Diocesan All-Tournament Team this year.  Both Michael P. and Michael S. were voted to the All-Tournament team. This is a great honor and I congratulate both of them for their success and on some truly great play.

I must say that without the support of all of the other boys this would not have been possible as they must play as a team for any one of them to be able to excel, so I want to also congratulate the entire team on excellent play throughout the tournament and making this possible for both boys to win these honors.  We had several different boys that could have been individual game MVPs for different games all tournament long.

A Semi-Finals Win

E-mail Print PDF

We played St. Andrews #1, the Champion of the Stanton Division of the Diocesan Varsity Volleyball league who went 16-0 in their league play this year.  The boys played very hard and won this match.  The St. Andrews team was a very hard volleying team as we hit the ball often and they sent many of those back at us.

In the first game we won 25-22 and the team was led in serving by Marc G. with 11 good serves and 2 of those for ace followed by Alex H. with 4 good and 2 for ace.  We were down 15-16 the second time that Marc started serving and the team made the next 7 points off of his serving.  We did not keep passing or settings stats for the tourney, but Mike P. led the team with 13 hits and 5 of those for kill followed by Marc G. with 6 hits, 3 for kill.

In the second game we won 25-20 and the team was led in serving by Mike S. with 10 good serves and 1 of those for kill, followed by Marc G. with 5 good serves.  Marc G. also led the team with hitting with 15 hits, 7 of those for kill followed by Mike P. with 5 hits, 4 for kill.

As I said, hitting was the key and we could not have done that without good passing and solid setting which we had from everyone these games!
